Urban Decay... I don't buy products tested on animals, how could anyone?

The last time I visited my local Urban Decay counter I spent a hefty £90! After reading the recent press release from Urban Decay about their expansion into China, I can honestly say I feel like I've been mugged. Last week I submitted my final piece of work for my degree, I wrote an article titled: Beauty & The Beast - Beauty being the industry & the Beast being the companies which test on animals. The article focused on the EU Cosmetics Directive & the proposed amendments for 2013, I also researched company testing policies and the differences between cruelty free and not tested on animals.

Towards the end of my feature I included a list of companies which readers might like to try, Urban Decay were at the top of my list... They were not tested on animals,  they were cruelty free & they offered a substantial range of vegan cosmetics.

I have read the press release given by Urban Decay & as far as I'm concerned they are just another company putting profits first. There are many companies who do not test on animals & do not trade with China because of the Chinese policies, that is exactly why they do not do business with them. In my opinion, Urban Decay are going into this with their eyes wide open, they know, in fact they state that a one-off test will be carried out. Going into business with China on this subject, I feel that they are giving their blessing, it's ludicrous to think that they can change the Chinese way of thinking from within.

Today I signed the petition which aims to persuade Urban Decay not to trade with China.

This is what I had to say: Testing on animals is disgusting, unnecessary & a backwards step! With the proposed 2013 amendment to the EU Cosmetics Directive, whether people purchase their products for being Cruelty Free or not, any new products will not be allowed to be sold in the EU should the amendment go through! I will respect UD's wish to trade within China & submit animals to torture, BUT UD will have no choice but to respect my wish not to buy their products anymore.

At present the petition has 1,198 signatures, that means that Urban Decay will currently have to find 1,198 Chinese people to purchase their products just to break even on customer numbers. They have already stated in their press release, that it will take some time for them to break into the Chinese market. I can't possibly think how this will be a worthwhile investment. Urban Decay if you dance with the Devil, you may just get your fingers burnt.

There is plenty of reading on Twitter, Facebook & the Blogosphere,
if you'd like to make up your own mind.

    1. It's so infuriating! They're not the first to U-turn, with Avon & Estee Lauder being uncovered earlier this year :-( xx

  2. The petition is really gathering a lot of signatures now, hopefully it'll reach 10,000 before the live chat with Wende Zomnir. I also recently made some big purchases with them, and feel utterly betrayed. Can't even look at my palettes right now. :(

    1. I keep checking & I can see that it's gathering momentum, which can only be a good thing! If money talks, hopefully it'll hit them in the pocket & they wont do it! *fingers crossed* xx
