An Escalating Annoyance...

Another week... Another moan...

I really need to get myself more organised, so the majority of my blog posts aren't simply me having a whinge!

Today's post has been inspired by my journey, earlier today which involved an escalator... I spend a lot of my time travelling, whether it's by car, train or on foot & generally whilst going from A-B, I'm also attempting to get to C, whilst planning to get to D - if it's not already obvious, I live a pretty busy life... The days when I could take a leisurely stroll from A - B are long gone & instead I spent my time darting around like fly with a rocket up it's bottom...

Now, that it's officially 'that time of year' - it is already getting very busy... Amongst the many unofficial & unwritten rules of society, falls escalator etiquette...

e-ti-quette (noun)
Conventional requirements as to social behavior; proprieties
of conduct as established in any class or community or for any occasion.

As a frequent user of London's Underground,  the rules of escalator etiquette are clearly signposted 'PLEASE STAND ON THE RIGHT' & the majority of people are able to do this with little thought... However, when the thoughtless are being thoughtless, others are quite vocal in moving them along...

So why, when an escalator is placed in a shopping center or a department store, do some people not follow escalator etiquette?

I can't say how many times in the past week I have been stuck on an escalator, trying to get past the people in front... I say excuses me & they either ignore me, or look at me like I'm an alien... If I'm lucky I can move 3 steps before someone else is in my way... Then, to top it off... Once I've managed to reach the top of the escalator, the said people stop to chat, yet again in my way... Why can't people be more considerate?

Due to the position of where I usually work (because like I said earlier, I travel alot) I have no choice but to use an escalator, infact 3 escalators...

There are many types of people who fail to comply to escalator etiquette. Phone zombies; shoppers with masses of bags, parents with unruly children & people who are casually shopping with their pals are just a few of the main offenders...

One should stand on the right & let the speedy-bee's pass on the left!

FYI... I was once chased by a CLOWN up an escalator & believe me, I couldn't get away fast enough!! Thankfully, the escalator was clear!

Until next time...

  2. Grrr!!! So frustrating. And why do people look at the rare few who actually choose to move while on an escalator as though they have 4 heads? They're just fancy stairs people! :) You can walk up them - and you should - and it's so much faster. Nothing more irritating, especially this time of year, than wasting time stuck behind someone who won't get out of the way on an escalator! Glad it's not just me that feels this way too! :)
